P6000 no sound

I have a P6000 running Windows 7 Home Premium; in the last week, my sound has "died" periodically and for no apparent reason.  First tried downloading the drivers again (as I was getting a message that no device was installed), and although the drivers downloaded just fine, it still didn't solve the problem.  Ran system restore from a point where I knew I had sound and that seemed to fix the problem.  But it's happened repeatedly in the last several days -- when I boot up the computer, I have the dreaded red "x" over the speakers icon.  Each time I've had to use "restore" to get the sound back, and have always chosen the most recent restore point where I knew I had sound.  Is this going to be a routine part of booting up from now on?  Boot up, run "restore", reboot computer???
