Can I upgrade graphics card (video) for a Presario SR5413WM Desktop w/ Vista Home 32-bit?

I've inherited a Compaq Presario SR5413WM Desktop w/ Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Right now it's using the latest drivers for the built in graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 6150se nForce 430. This isn't good enough for even some basic games. I've found Vista doesn't like it when you try to install another video card of a different brand. I had 2 different ATI graphic cards. I scoured forums on any work arounds but none of them worked. I tried turning off onboard graphics in the BIOS but there really isn't an option for that. I am able to tell the BIOS to choose PCI video but the onboard still takes over as soon as windows starts. When I try to use the newly installed cards I only get No Signal on the monitor, but the onboard still works every time. I have verified both of these ATI cards work in different computers (Win XP & 7). The power supply in this desktop has also been upgraded to accomodate a higher graphics card.  Vista doesn't give me an option to choose a different video card in the display settings, Vista disabled the new card every time it boots up. At this point I'm trying to find out if there is any possible way to upgrade the video? Would a higher NVIDIA card work? If so does anyone have any model numbers available? I would even be willing to get something from HP. Any suggestions or resolutions would be greatly appreciated.
