Sound conflict problems? **HP TouchSmart All-In-One 610**

Dear HP Community,

  I'm having a problem with the sound in my system. I experienced this problem a fair while back, but I can't remember for the life of me, what I did to resolve the issue. The problem I'm facing is; When I listen to music or sound from a source (Windows Media Player, YouTube. etc.) when another sound plays from a different source, it sort of 'knocks-out' the sound from the first 'original' source of playing sound.

  As an example, if I have two YouTube videos playing together in one web browser (in different 'tabs'), I should be able to hear sound from both videos together (which is the normal situation) but I only get sound from one of the videos, whilst both videos are playing simultaneously.

  Or if I'm signed into Steam and watching a YouTube video in a web browser, I get sound & video playback from YouTube (as normal) but if I get a notification through Steam that a friend has signed online or a message. etc. The notification sound from Steam stops the sound coming from the YouTube video, as the YouTube video continues to play. Another example would be that if I'm playing a game and I'm listening or want to listen to music through Windows Media Player, I get no sound at all from the game and just the sound from Windows Media Player.

I've gone into my Speaker Setup settings to see if there's an issue and I have three options to choose from, which are;

  • Stereo
  • Quadraphonic
  • 5.1 Surround

If I click on 'Test' on any of them, I receive the following message;

"The device is being used by another application. If you continue, that application may stop working. Do you want to continue?"

My Computer system is a "HP TouchSmart 610-1270uk Desktop PC"

Many thanks
