No sound playback device is recognized

Hi,

I have a Pavilion 500-205t and would like to use the audio capabilities of the Powerpoint software.  I am having problems because no speakers or headphones are recognized as plugged in.  I am in Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback, and I am getting the message "Not plugged in" underneath "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."  I need this to work because I want to include background music in a Powerpoint slide.

I have only tried using the standard white earbuds that come with the Apple IPhone 5s, but this clearly isn't working.

Could someone please help?
