Desktop PC Digital Audio to HDTV S/DIF connection.

I am wanting to use my HDTV as a 42" monitor.  This is the layout I have to work with: Desktop HP Presario P6000  with DVI-D video port and the TV has HDMI port but I'd get video only usinging the DVI-D to HDMI converter. So, my question is  about the audio.  I have a Digital Audio port on the back of the PC.  My TV has both RCA audio and the S/DIF connection.   I'd like your feedback on the following option: HDMI to DVI-D converter cable for VIDEO and a separate Digital Audio out (on back of my PC) to SPDIF connection (on the back of the TV?) for the AUDIO.  Just wondering if the sound would be better than using the 3.5m jack to RCA connection.   I've been studying on this for so long that I could probably name most ports available on TV's and Desktops....I just don't have any OJT to know what will work and what won't so if this is ALL wrong please point me in the right direction!  Has anyone done a similar set up?  Thank you for your feedback, Elaine

PS....Does anyone know if there is a cable "out there" that has the HDMI + S/DIF connections on one end and the DVI-D + Digital Audio connection on the other....or is this a wishful pipe dream...maybe someone should invent this?
