no signal to monitor when awakes from sleep mode

I have a HP Pavillion 500-314 with Windows 8.1, Product  F3E92AA#ABA,  64bit.  When the computer goes into sleep mode and I move the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard the computer wakes but i have to hold down the power button and reboot to get a signal to the monitor.
