HP 2311x HDMI to DVI cable not working

Hello, 

I recently bought a HDMI to DVI cable to play my ps3 on my computer monitor. I use DVI on the monitor for my usual computer, but when i plug the HDMI into my ps3 and the DVI into my monitor it tells me to check video cable and then goes asleep.

I've tried holding down the ps3 power button and resetting my computer monitor multiple times and now im out of ideas.
