HP Expert Day!
The graphics card on my h8-1234 doesn't do so well with modern games, so I bought a Radeon R7 260X to upgrade it.
I upgraded the PSU to 500W, checked the voltage to the 6-pin connector, and put the card into the slot. Fry's checked the card already, so I know it's not the problem.
The computer does not start up. All the fans spin (on the R7 and pre-existing), but the monitor stays black. The power light on the monitor dims for a couple seconds every now and again.
The boards are full of people with similar problems, but no definitive answers as to how I can get this to work.
AMD tech support said my hardware is fine, but HP has something going on that only HP can tell me how to change.
Things I've already tried:
1. Updating the BIOS. I've done this three times, each time with a "Success! Restart now?" message. When the computer comes back, the BIOS version is the same as pre-update.
2. Turning off Secure Boot and turning on Legacy Mode in the BIOS startup. These are the defaults already. This solution seems to only apply to Windows 8/8.1 users.
I hate to trash this PC and build my own, but it's looking like that's all I can do at this point. So, I'd definitely appreciate any help.
