My current video card is a GeForce 8500 | NVIDIA and I want to install a EVGA GeForce 8400 GS with it.
I have a 300W power supply and see no problems with this. Question is do I need to unintall my first card and remove it before installing the 2nd one? A friend told me I should... Is this true?
actually here's exactly what he told me... I just need to know if what he says is true and all this riga-ma-roll is neccessary...
"There are essentially two types of card architecture that all card makers utilize one or the other. They are ATI Radeon and NVDIA. They perform very differently. Never mix the two types in the same computer.
First: Determine the type you have.
Second: Open your case and see that you have an open expansion slot.
Third: Be sure your power supply is adequate to support more as the card can be a power hog. 300 watts for the minimum. There is a label on the power supply with its specs.
Fourth: Be sure the new card fan does not take up the space encroaching on the next slot space if you can not spare the room. Some cards have no fan but use heat sinks.
Fifth: Determine the card slot type. The most common is PCI Express.
Sixth: Remove your present card before you install the new including its drivers and software completely. Do not think that windows will do this for you.
Seventh: Reinstall the original card and decline delete requests.
Your motherboard may reject all this but the only way you can tell in advance is to identify the maker and model and contact them for card two installation advice."
I would think I could just install the 2nd and the computer will take care of the rest. Also being the cards are very similar to each other...
What say the experts? THanks!
