BIOS Question about enabling/disabling playback/recording ports

I have an HP Compaq Tower that has 2 ports on the front above the USB ports - 1 is for microphone and the other is for headphones. I also have the same 2 ports on the rear of my computer. I have solved this issue before but am currently at a loss. I have a 2 female - male splitter than I have plugged into the microphone jack that has an extra cable to plug into my headphones.

My headphones have an in-line mic that I wanted to be able to use to chat online using skype. At the moment the only mic that will work is the one on the actual webcam and it completely sucks. (The webcam is a non issue with the original question because it's USB).

Here's the question - how do I make my headphones with the in-line mic work as a chat headset, as they're supposed to be used for? Do I need to buy a female - 2 male splitters? Or can I go into the BIOS and enable/disable the ports so that I can plug my headphones in and chat BUT still be able to use my speakers for non chat related things?

As I recall I did this through WE the last time or I ran something in a DOS prompt. If this is possible, would you mind telling me where to go to find these ports and fix them? I know, stupid issue you probably hear it all the time.

Thanks everyone!
