HP Envy 700 Dual Monitor

I have an HP Envy 700 PC and I am trying to get the dual screens to work in extended mode.  I read the earlier post but this did not help me.

The two DVI ports are covered so I am using the DVI-I port and HDMI port.  I am using the Pavilion 23xi that came with the computer and a dell screen.  I have my Pavilion connected into the HDMI port and my Dell into the DVI-I port.

When I go to the Display/Screen Resolution, both Monitors show up, with the Pavilion connected in the HDMI as number 1 and the Dell through the DVI-I port as number 2.   However, both monitors only display when the Multiple displays option: "Duplicate these displays" option is used.  If I try "Extend these displays", the Pavilion through the HDMI cable no longer displays and I get the message on the screen "Monitor Going to Sleep"

If I go "Show desktop only on 1" neither monitor displays.

As well, if I unplug the Dell screen from the DVI-I port and only use the Pavilion in the HDMI port, it does not display.  To sum up, a monitor plugged in the HDMI port only works when the computer is in clone mode "Duplicate these displays".

Any idea how I can get the monitors to work in "Extend these displays" mode?  Another option if it is not possible to use the HDMI port, 1) can I unplug the 2 DVI ports that say "Do not Remove"  2) Use a dual cord in the DVI-I port?
