We have had the HP/Compaq Presario SR1830NX with HP vs17e monitor for seven years. It came with Windows XP.
Last year we had our local PC shop remove Windows XP and install Windows 8.
I upgraded the motherboard's RAM memory from 1GB to 3 GB.
The monitor would not run at 1280x1024 resolution until I installed a GE Force 6200 NVIDIA card to run the monitor (with no monitor connected to the VGA connector on the motherboard.)
(That caused the Audio to mute intermittently. We tried Audio settings in BIOS, but that didn't fix the audio problem. We fixed the audio problem by running external speakers from a USB port.)
Last week I installed Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft web site.
But, now with Windows 8.1, when videos are played, such as from YouTube, the PC crashes with light blue screeen and message about "video_tdr_failure (nvlddmkm.sys)"
PC reboots.
I removed the GE Force 6200 NVIDIA card and reconnected the monitor to the motherboard VGA and set monitor resolution to 1024 x 768 and now videos work fine with no crashes.
How can we fix this problem so that 1280x1024 resolution is working on the HPvs17e monitor and without PC crashing using Windows 8.1?
