HP 500-314 Audio is Deaded

I have a HP Pavilion 500-314 Desktop using optical connection to my tuner for HD audio. All was working fine when I July 23. When I returned on July 31 I found thataudio is not working. Only system event was MS upgrade and my assumption is that they killed the drivers. I verified all hardware components in the audio system and contacted HP support. After 4 hours of tweaking only solution was to nuke the system and reinstall. I pointed out that the fix would only last until the upgrade was installed to which the tech agreed and politely excused himself.

Sound device monitor and Mixer shows activity but there is no actual output from any audio device. System sounds do not play out of optical port or either of the audio output jacks.

Support Suggestions Tried:

Windows Media Player does not solve the problem

Reinstallation of all sound drivers does not solve the problem

BIOS does not have an audio option so I cannot override "Auto" selection.  NOTE: Is there a software switch?

2nd HP technician now wants me to send the system to them for possible BIOS upgrade which, according to him, cannot be completed locally. Suggestions?

Ron
