'Monitor going to sleep' - where is the problem?

I have a 5 month old HP 15-G094SA laptop and the backlight has gone. I purchased the laptop in the UK but won't be back in the country until May. I have been told that the whole screen will need to be replaced, which I expect the shop I bought it from to do when I go back.

In the meantime I have bought a HP LV1911 monitor so that I can still use the laptop. The laptop does not have a VGA port, just HDMI and the monitor is VGA. I have bought a 'Multistar HDMI to VGA convertor'. However, when I connect the laptop to the monitor via the convertor the monitor only displays 'Monitor Going to Sleep'. I have seen some other posts with this issue and have looked at the online monitor manual but this hasn't helped. In some cases it says that you need to reset something on the laptop, I can't do any of this as I can't see the laptop display.

I'm not very computer savvy so I don't know if there's a simple thing that I haven't done or if the convertor doesn't work or if there's more wrong with the laptop than just the backlight.

I know the monitor does work as I used it with another laptop that was a simple VGA to VGA connection. I think it is only the laptop backlight which is broken as at the computer shop they connected it to their monitor and it worked.

Any help to fixing this issue would be much appreciated as it's getting very frustrating! Thank you :smileyhappy:
